Life at Torres Strait Kaziw Meta

We house 67 boarders in five family group houses set amongst lush gardens. Age groups and year levels live together, under the supervision of house parent staff living onsite. Each room accommodates two boarders plus their own cupboard for clothing and belongings. Boarders share a bathroom and have their own laundry and outside sitting area, plus a communal lounge and dining area.

To help all our boarders have a safe and positive boarding experience, Torres Strait Kaziw Meta has a zero tolerance to bullying, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. We can also help access professional counselling services on Thursday Island, for any boarder experiencing issues affecting their wellbeing.

“Staying at Torres Strait Kaziw Meta has allowed me to build kinship with students from every other island. We met as strangers, and left as family - brothers & sisters.”
- Ella Hosea-Peters
“What I loved about Torres Strait Kaziw Meta, is it taught me real life skills; duties/chores, self care, being responsible, and being a leader.”
- Walea Tom

Our Difference

Torres Strait Kaziw Meta is a unique on-country home designed to meet the needs of the boarders who travel long distances from their outer islands, and live with us for 6 years. Life at Torres Strait Kaziw Meta is holistically balanced to build self confidence in every boarder, by focusing on both education and extra-curricular activities of sport, dance, cooking, technical and life skills.

The internationally recognised Torres Strait Kaziw Meta Dance Team regularly perform a curated repertoire of culturally significant stories with permission from the children’s outer islands leaders. The performances, protocols and rich cultural meaning of these performances provide a foundation that underpins our young Torres Strait Islander children’s identity. Our unique dual focus on education and extra-curricular activities supports each boarder as they mature into the next generation of Torres Strait Islander leaders.
