Threads of Connection: Torres Strait Kaziw Meta Celebrates National Boarding Week in S.T.Y.L.E

Last week, Torres Strait Kaziw Meta celebrated National Boarding Week 2025 (11–17 May) and this year’s theme: Threads of Connection, with activities that encouraged bonding and belonging.

Boarding houses opened the week collaborating with each other to design banners that captured the strength and unity of the Torres Strait Kaziw Meta community. They also hosted dinners and shared cards of gratitude and acknowledgement with each other, and their house parents.

National Boarding Week shines a spotlight on the people, places and partnerships that make boarding more than a place to stay, but a home-away-from-home for 74 future Torres Strait Islander leaders from across our region.

Torres Strait Kaziw Meta CEO, Thomas Dunsmore praised the efforts of boarders and staff and emphasised the importance of connection.

“At Kaziw Meta, our focus goes beyond academics,” Mr Dunsmore said.

“We’re building young leaders grounded in culture, resilience and connection and it’s important that our boarders develop strong relationships with us and each other; that’s what National Boarding Week is all about this year,”

Other activities included Baking and Cooking, Appreciation gifts for teaching staff at Tagai, Administration Staff, Messages for families and more. On Wednesday, the boarders and staff held an Ice Bucket Challenge for Wellbeing; an initiative program delivered by Torres Health.

Torres Strait Kaziw Meta’s Director of Boarding Aunty Julie Cubit was also celebrated on Boarding Principal Day and said she looks forward to National Boarding Week every year.

“Our boarders are living proof of what’s possible when young people are supported, seen, and celebrated,” Auty Julie said.

“National Boarding Week gives us a moment to pause and appreciate the incredible strength, diversity, and spirit that lives within our community.”

This year’s theme resonated strongly throughout the week as boarders, staff, and community partners came together to honur the stories, strengths, and shared experiences that shape Torres Strait Kaziw Meta.

Kaziw Meta extends its appreciation to the Australian Boarding Schools Association for championing the week nationally, and thanks all the community members, partners and families who continue to support the success and wellbeing of boarders across Zenadth Kes.
